Permission to Flourish: Mental Health and the Art of Black Maternal Joy, with Keisha Reaves, LPC, CPCS, PMH-C

Permission to Flourish: Mental Health and the Art of Black Maternal Joy, with Keisha Reaves, LPC, CPCS, PMH-C

In honor of Black Maternal Health Awareness Week 2026: Rooted in Justice & Joy, Athens Parent Wellbeing and the Athens BMHAW Committee will be partnering and APW's Therapist of the Year 2025, Keisha Reaves, of Push Thru Therapy, to the Zoom room to encourage Black Mothers to gather virtually to unpack wellness and reclaim joy.

Thursday, April 16th from 12-1 pm

This session will be recorded in case you can't make it.

We will have a Q & A portion so you can ask your questions.

Themes we will be exploring:

1. As Black mothers, we are so often celebrated for our strength, but strength can sometimes be a mask. What does it look like to give yourself permission to not be okay, and where do you even begin with that?
2. So much of new motherhood is about the baby. How do Black mothers begin to hold space for their own identity, needs, and joy when the world is telling them their job is simply to pour out?
3.Teenagers push back, pull away, and test everything, including our patience and our sense of self as mothers. How do we stay rooted in joy during seasons of motherhood that can feel like anything but joyful?
4.When the children leave, many mothers describe a grief that nobody prepared them for, a loss of identity, purpose, and even daily structure. How do we redefine who we are and what joy looks like in this new season?
5.Screening for postpartum depression and maternal mental health challenges is something that should happen routinely, but many Black mothers report feeling dismissed or unheard when they do raise concerns with their providers. What should a mother know about advocating for herself in those clinical spaces? What does equitable screening look like?
6. If every Black mother in this room could walk away and do one thing this week to invest in her own mental health and joy,  what would you want that to be?
